The full interior design process
- A short introduction before the collaboration formally begins, where we talk about the project, how you'd like to work together, timings and budget.
- If you have floor plans, photographs or other documentation to hand, please send them to us before the consultation. It helps us prepare properly for the meeting.
- After the initial consultation we prepare a proposal of services based on your individual needs, including an analysis of the space and a price.
- If we agree to work together on that basis, we'll send you the contract documents and can begin work on your project in earnest.
- Every person is different, and the space they live in should suit their way of life just as precisely. That's why, right at the start of our collaboration, we sit down with you and everyone else in the household for a detailed conversation, getting to know you, your habits, needs and wishes as well as we can. It can take several hours.
- At this stage we'll ask you to show us what you like (please prepare 3–5 images of interiors that inspire you).
- We're also interested in whether you have existing furniture, accessories, electronics or larger, distinctive pieces we could work into the new design (we'll ask you to photograph and measure them and send us the product details).
- Ideally we visit the space in person and carry out a thorough survey and photographic record of its existing condition. The result is a simple 3D model and a drawing of the space as it stands.
- For a new-build with detailed, accurate documentation, a survey may not be strictly necessary. Even so, visiting in person is valuable to us — it's how we get a feel for the atmosphere, the light and the surroundings.
- After the survey we create a shared interactive board in Miro, where we keep all the background material, proposals and updates as the project goes along. In one place you can comment, approve and stay on top of how the project is developing. Over the course of the collaboration this builds into a clear record of the design that you can return to at any time.
- We propose several layout options, from first sketches to schematic 3D views. We then refine them with you until we arrive at the best solution. We believe a space has to work first and foremost, and suit the way you live — which makes this perhaps the most important phase of the design.
- You receive updated interactive previews of the 3D model of your space, which you can rotate, measure and zoom in and out as you like, so you understand the design as fully as possible. In our view, 2D outputs on their own can distort a design or be hard to read.
- Based on your inspiration and preferences, we prepare several options for colours, materials and style. As with the layout, we gradually refine your preferred combination together, and the space begins to take on character.
- An image can never quite convey how a colour looks under different light, or whether a floor will feel pleasant underfoot. Where possible, we go through our own samples together, or visit shops and showrooms so you can see and handle the materials in person.
- The chosen colours and materials go into the model as well, and we start working on the specific form and style.
- We begin talking to the joinery workshop or another maker, and the bespoke furniture takes its final shape, which we then set into the model and the budget.
- We discuss the specifics with you — materials, ironmongery, opening mechanisms and internal arrangements.
- Depending on the agreed scope, we can produce design drawings for the furniture and then check that the manufacturing documentation matches the design.
- Based on the previous steps and your budget, we select suitable off-the-shelf furniture and place it in the model. Where possible we can also go with you to the shops to try things out, or set your own treasured pieces into the model from photographs and dimensions, so you can see how they'll look in the newly designed space.
- Once we've agreed on the specific products, we prepare a Product Book for you — a detailed guide to what to buy, where and how, with quantities, details and practical information.
- By now we know the zones within the space and exactly where the furniture will go. We can turn to the positions of sockets, switches and light fittings.
- First we sketch it out together and, once it's approved, prepare the technical documentation and the information the electrician needs.
- The same goes for the light fittings. We'll talk about placement, specifications and the moods you'd like to create.
- We then visit specialists together and choose the individual pieces in a lighting showroom.
- The result is both drawings for the electrician and a Lighting Book (like the Product Book, but for light fittings).
- We work all the information into the final 3D model and prepare an outline budget for the build. On that basis you can decide whether anything still needs adjusting, or whether you're happy with the result.
- We involve you throughout the process and leave room for consultation and refinement at each phase, so we don't expect radical changes at this stage. Even so, 2–3 client revisions are included, depending on the package agreed. Further revisions are possible at additional cost.
- On request we can also produce a photorealistic render. This is an additional service.
- Working visualisations for testing combinations of materials and colours are part of the process and included in the packages.
We prepare technical drawings according to the needs and scope of the project. These may include:
- Building floor plans of the existing and proposed layout
- Proposed layout drawing
- Demolition plan
- Electrical drawings (lighting, sockets, data and low-voltage)
- Proposed plumbing and drainage layout
- Tiling setting-out drawing and quantity calculation (for bathrooms and floors)
- Element schedule and specification drawing
- Design drawings of furniture units
- The basic design package includes recommendations and help with choosing a contractor and a joinery workshop. We'll compare several quotes for you and talk them through, if that's useful. We help with communication and, as a service beyond the basic package, provide design supervision during the build.
- It often happens that a client and a designer conjure up a perfect space, only for the wrong contractor and careless suppliers to leave it looking nothing like the design. Our job is to make sure the contractors respect the design and that the project is carried carefully into reality.

Commercial spaces are a discipline of their own. Depending on the type of project, they call for their own process strategy, which we tailor to the client's needs.
For commercial projects we tailor the process to the brief — get in touch.
